Michigan State Police holds district headquarters open house

MARQUETTE — The Michigan State Police gave Upper Peninsula residents a chance to tour the agency’s Upper Peninsula district headquarters Friday afternoon.

A wide range of specialty services are run out of the 8th District headquarters complex.  Interested residents got a chance to speak with troopers who provide those services and to see exactly what they do.

“We try to this once a year, and behind me you see we have all of our specialty services whether it’s the bomb squad, K-9 unit, underwater recovery unit, our emergency support team.  We’re a full service agency,” MSP 8th District commander Capt. John Halpin said.

The Michigan State Police moved the 8th District Headquarters recently from near Jilbert Dairy to the location of the forensic lab, just off of Wright Street.

“We moved to this location last year, last fall, about a year ago,” Capt. Halpin said.  “From this district headquarters, we supervise all the State Police services in the Upper Peninsula, which includes seven posts and six detachments.”

Capt. Halpin says anyone with any questions about what the Michigan State Police do in the U.P. can either call the nearest post or the district headquarters to get some answers.
