Calumet man avoids stabbing charges after victim refuses to testify

A Calumet man who was arrested on stabbing charges in early July had his case dismissed today in Houghton County District Court.

Kyle Huuki, 26, was originally charged with felonious assault or assault with intent to commit great bodily harm less than murder. However, according to the Houghton County Prosecutor’s Office, those charges were dropped after the victim refused to testify.

Michigan State Police Troopers say the alleged victim, who opted to plead the fifth, got into an argument with Huuki outside of his residence on Hecla Street in Calumet in the early hours of July 11th. The argument eventually escalated into a fight, at which time police were called in.

The victim’s name is not being released, but police say he is a 25-year-old Laurium man. He was treated at Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital after the incident and later released.

Police say alcohol was a factor in the altercation.
