Marquette soccer fans cheer on Team U.S.A.

Soccer fans from Marquette gathered to watch Team U.S.A. play its first match of the World Cup Monday night.

Dozens of people, including members of the Marquette Adult Soccer Club, met at The Doghouse as the United States played Ghana.

There were even a few international fans taking in all the action of the World Cup.

“It would be nice to have Brazil and the U.S. in the finals, but let’s be realistic that’s not going to happen, but I’m going to cheer for the U.S. to get as far as they can go, but of course when it comes to the end, I’m going to have to cheer for my home country, I’m sorry,” Brazil and U.S. fan Milton Braga said.

“Brazil’s my favorite team,” Alan Perry said. “I’ve watched them for many years, and I’ve always enjoyed their style of soccer.”

Fans were very surprised when the U.S. took the lead only seconds into the game.

“Ghana has knocked the U.S. out of the last two World Cups so that’s crazy in soccer terms to score that quickly,” U.S. fan Marc Hefke said. “The U.S. has to get a win in this game, or they really won’t qualify for the next round because they have Portugal and Germany in the same group, so things got crazy all of a sudden in here.”

“I love soccer but I’d love to see the U.S. win,” Braga said. “Especially after Portugal lost today (Monday), and they lost one of their big defenders and they look very disorganized. I think the U.S. will win (Monday), they have a tremendous chance to get out of the group, and for the U.S. to get out of the group would be a huge accomplishment.”

The Marquette Adult Soccer Club will host other World Cup viewing parties for the other games the U.S. will play in.
