Democrats issue statements on gay marriage ruling
Judge Bernard Friedman overturned Michigan’s gay marriage ban Friday afternoon.
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mark Schauer issued a statement commenting on Judge Friedman’s ruling on marriage equality.
“This is a major victory for loving, committed couples across the state. While I know there are differing views on this issue, I firmly believe every Michigander deserves equal protection under the law, and Friday’s ruling reaffirms this fundamental American value.
“Michigan’s marriage equality ban hurts our economy by making it harder to attract highly-skilled workers and entrepreneurs. It’s time for Gov. Snyder and Attorney General Schuette to accept this ruling, and stop wasting Michigan taxpayer dollars on a costly appeal.
“As Governor, discrimination will have no place in my administration. I’ll wake up every day focused on rebuilding our economy, and protecting the rights of all Michigan citizens.”
Michigan Democratic Party Chair Lon Johnson also issued a statement on the ruling:
“It’s great that Judge Friedman made a common sense decision that in Michigan, every loving, committed couple should be treated equally under the law,” Johnson said. “But it’s appalling that Republican politicians Rick Snyder and Bill Schuette wasted our tax dollars on an embarrassing, flailing attempt to protect a hateful, bigoted marriage ban. Michigan families deserve leaders who will stand up for what’s right. Our state needs leaders like Mark Schauer and Gary Peters, who will work to build a stronger, more welcoming Michigan for everyone.”
