Gwinn hires new head football coach
Gwinn Area Community Schools announced on Wednesday that Dion Brown has been hired as the new varsity football head coach.
Brown coached the Modeltowners junior varsity team last season. Prior to that, Brown spent five seasons as an assistant coach for Jeff Olson at Ishpeming. Brown played football. He played at Harper Community College in Shamburg, Ill. for two seasons (2001-02), before transferring to Northern Michigan University, where he played for two more seasons (2003-04).
“I’m trying to chance the whole culture here at Gwinn,” Brown told ABC 10 Sports late Wednesday night. “I’m excited about the upcoming season.”
The Modeltowners went 2-7 in 2013. Darren Sinnaeve stepped down as the team’s head coach in December to focus on coaching the boy’s varsity basketball team at Gwinn. The Modeltowners have not made the playoffs since 1999. Their last season over the .500 mark was in 2000 when Gwinn finished with a 5-4 record.
