Outhouse to raise money for MGH’s wig salon
The Trenary Outhouse Classic is set for Saturday, and one outhouse is racing for a special cause.
Mary Ann Bernier is heading up Team “Poop on Cancer” with a purpose to raise funds for Marquette General Hospital’s wig salon.
A cancer survivor herself, she knew she wanted to help others going through the same thing she did.
“Back in 2007 I was diagnosed with breast cancer, and within the first fourteen days of starting chemo I lost my hair,” Bernier said. “So I was referred to the wig salon by the oncology office and they were great.”
“I wanted to do to something for the wig salon, and I wanted it to to be fun. So I decided I was going to participate with my sisters at the (Trenary) Outhouse Classic, and combine a fun event with fundraising, and we decided to do ‘Poop with a Purpose’.”
The wig salon provides wigs or head coverings to people who lose hair due to medical conditions, and operates only on donations.
“They (the patients) already have so many things on their mind, and they don’t have to worry about getting the wig,” MGH wig salon coordinator Dar Shepherd said. “There’s scarves, people are making beautiful hand-knit hats, crocheted hats for them in nice soft yarn.”
“It’s all done by donations, so if you have something to donate fine, if not that’s fine too, it’s okay.”
At the outhouse classic, Bernier and her team will be selling cupcakes and taking donations, with all proceeds benefiting the salon.
