Brief standoff leads to arrest
A man is in jail after a brief standoff with police in Ironwood over the weekend.
Ironwood Public Safety says the incident took place on Saturday on Suffolk Street. There’s no word on when specifically it happened. When officers arrived to respond to a larceny complaint, they say they recognized a male suspect who had an outstanding warrant for his arrest and who was known to be armed.
Police gave the suspect verbal commands that they say he refused to follow. Officers arrested him after a short standoff for carrying a concealed weapon and being a felon in possession of a firearm. The suspect is said to have had a 9-millimeter handgun and a full magazine of hollow-point bullets.
The man is in the Gogebic County Jail on $7,500 bond. The Hurley Police, the Gogebic County Sheriff’s Department, the Michigan State Police and Beacon Ambulance assisted at the scene.
