New exhibits showcase the Upper Peninsula

Two new exhibits are now on display at the Marquette Arts and Culture Center, helping to show off the many talents of artists in the area.

The Smallworks Gallery will feature the “Revisiting People and Places” exhibit throughout February.  It showcases new paintings by Paul Grant, a Michigan native, who has been making art in Marquette for twenty years now.

His works capture scenes from scenic spots throughout the Upper Peninsula, like the Escanaba River.

“He is an avid fly fisherman, and a woodsman, so all these places are areas in the U.P. where he has visited and painted many, many times,” MACC Community Service Manager Tiina Harris said.

A second exhibit in MACC’s main gallery, entitled “Rock, Water, and Wood,” features a mixture of pastel, oil, and woodturning pieces from three members of the Lake Superior Art Association.

Community members are encouraged to visit the exhibits and see what Upper Peninsula artists have to offer.

“We have incredible artists that choose to live and work here, and many of which, like Paul Grant, are making their livings solely on creating art,” Harris said. “So it’s important to support them, for them to know that we treasure them being here, that they’re an important part of our community.”

There will be an artist reception for both exhibits on Thursday at 6 p.m.  The exhibits will be on display through March 1.
