Marquette General names new CEO

Ed Banos took over as Marquette General CEO on Wednesday from Gary Muller, who retired after six years as chief executive. Banos had served as the hospital’s president and chief operating officer since last May, but he says his new job involves more community involvement than his old role.

“It’s an exciting time for us to meet a lot of people who are really dedicated to making the U.P. as healthy as we can be and, I know from my standpoint, making sure that we really provide a patient–centered, high–quality–focused facility is going to be important,” he said.

Banos came to Marquette from a hospital in Longview, Texas and held administrative roles at hospitals in Pittsburgh and Miami before that. He says Marquette General is doing a good job of adjusting to a more outpatient–based health care model and providing a total continuum of care.

“Get people out of the emergency room,” Banos said. “Getting them into the offices, making them sure they can get care in the hospital and in an outpatient setting, and being able to provide care closer to home, so it’s going to be important for us that we can provide that, and then also make sure that those services are being able to be provided in the U.P. with the recruitment of new specialists and getting the new equipment that we need.”

In mid–September, MGH announced a construction plan for a brand–new hospital campus. The future location has not been determined yet.

“We’re starting to have some people coming up here to Marquette to do some more discussions,” Banos said. “We’re having a lot more interest from the people that are doing some of the analysis, and we’re working with those people. We’ll get all of that data collected over the next couple of months.”

Banos says more information about the construction plan for the new campus should begin to come out as 2014 moves along.

Marquette General Hospital now has a new chief executive officer. Ed Banos has been named CEO, effective immediately. He had been president and chief operating officer of the hospital since last May.

MGH officials say Banos has more than 25 years of experience in hospital administration and health care executive roles. He came to MGH from Good Shepherd Health System in Longview, Texas, where he was the system president and CEO. Prior to that, he worked for two hospitals in major cities. Banos was chief operating officer of Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh and the CEO of North Shore Medical Center in Miami.

Gary Muller stepped down from the CEO position at MGH at the end of the year. He’ll continue serving as president and CEO of Superior Health Partners until his scheduled retirement in February.
