Investigation into Empire Mine fire continues
The investigation into the cause of the fire at the Empire Mine in Palmer continues tonight.
Cliffs Natural Resources officials say they are still working with the U.S. Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health Administration, and the United Steelworks to determine what caused the blaze.
Officials say the fire started yesterday shortly before 6:00 a.m. in the Empire Mine’s limestone feeding system. The structure, which contains a series of conveyor belts that transport crushed limestone into the mine, appeared to be damaged as a result.
Employees were able to evacuate the mine safely. No one was hurt in the fire.
The Ishpeming Township, Richmond Township, Marquette Township and Negaunee City Fire Departments responded.
