Food assistance cutbacks affect the U.P.
Struggling families across the Upper Peninsula will suffer a blow Friday when a temporary increase in food stamp benefits ends.
The increase was part of the federal economic stimulus plan passed in 2009. Funding for that increase ends this week.
The state says an average family of four will see a decrease of $36 a month (http://www.michigan.gov/documents/dhs/FAP_Recipients_435552_7.pdf. As of November 1, recipients can find out the new benefit amount by calling (888) 678-8914 on their normal monthly loading date.
