NMU on Military-Friendly school list

MARQUETTE, Mich.—For the fifth straight year, Victory Media Inc. has named Northern Michigan University to its list of Military-Friendly Schools released by G.I. Jobs. The 2014 list honors the top 20 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace military students and ensure their success in the classroom and after graduation.

NMU offers a Veterans Scholarship guaranteeing in-state tuition for all eligible U.S. military veterans pursuing a college degree. In November 2012, the university also was selected by the Michigan Department of Military and Veterans Affairs as a host site for MI-VetSuccess, a campus-based outreach program supporting student veterans. One college or university in each of six geographic regions across the state was designated as the hub from which a designated campus counselor operates.

“Helping veterans transition from the military into educational programs is a privilege Northern Michigan University takes very seriously,” said NMU President David Haynes at the launch of MI-VetSuccess. “It’s especially important that this type of assistance is available in the Upper Peninsula, an area with a very high rate of military service, so that veterans and veteran students throughout the U.P. have local access to this kind of help.”

According to Victory Media, the 2014 list of Military-Friendly Schools was compiled through extensive research and a free, data-driven survey of more than 10,000 VA-approved schools nationwide. Each year, schools taking the survey are held to a higher standard than the previous year via improved methodology, criteria and weightings developed with the assistance of an academic advisory board consisting of educators nationwide.
