Porcupine Bash to help veterans
A fundraising event to show appreciation and support for veterans and military personnel will continue through the weekend.
Porcupine Bash 2013 is a four day camping event held at the Gitche Gumee RV Park and campground. The fundraiser is put on by several local non–profit veteran agencies, and features a handful of live music acts for campers to keep themselves entertained.
“We will have music all four days, and Sunday night, we not charging for camping if people would like to stay,” Member of the Combat Vets Motorcycle Association Arthur Bower said. “We’ve got a lot of blues bands and country bands coming up. We are going to have the open ceremony Saturday the 24th at 10:00am. We will be raising a flag that was flown in Afghanistan over an airstrip.”
Saturday will also feature the first annual run for the D.J. Jacobetti Veterans Home. The run is a police escorted drive from the camp to the veterans home. Tickets can be purchased during the Porcupine Bash.
“Every year we are trying to get better, more involved, helping our veterans. That’s our motto, ‘Veterans helping Vets’, with the Combat Vets Motorcycle Association,” Bower said. “That’s what we do, that’s what we’re about. We try to take care of our vets, our vets mean a lot to us.”
Combat Vets Motorcycle Association is asking participants to bring clothing and comfort items to donate. All proceeds go to the D.J. Jacobetti Members assistance fund.
