Anti-wolf hunt petition drive
A coalition of animal welfare organizations, conservation groups,
Native American tribes, wildlife scientists and veterinarians has
launched a second referendum campaign to stop wolf hunting in Michigan and to qualify for the November 2014 general election ballot.
A series of three grassroots organizing meetings will be held this
week in the Upper Peninsula.
The first event will be held in Sault Ste. Marie at 6 p.m., Tuesday,
July 23 at the Kewadin Casino & Hotel, 2186 Shunk Road. The second
meeting will be held in Houghton at 7 p.m., Wednesday, July 24 at
Country Inn & Suites, 919 Razorback Drive. The third meeting will be
held in Marquette at 6 p.m., Thursday, July 25 at the Ramada of
Marquette, 412 W. Washington Street.
Local volunteers will be trained to circulate petitions to repeal
Public Act 2013 which was passed by the Michigan Legislature to allow the seven-member Natural Resources
Commission to designate animals as game species. Keep Michigan Wolves Protected (KMWP) needs to gather
225,000 signatures of Michigan voters by late March in order to qualify for the ballot.
“The first referendum effort was necessary to restore protection for
Michigan’s wolves,” said Jill Fritz, director of KMWP. “Now,
because of this contemptuous action by the legislature, we have to do
a second referendum to restore the right of Michiganders to protect
their wolves and all wildlife.”
Organizing events also are being held in Ferndale, Dearborn Heights,
St. Joseph, Flint, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Lansing, Sterling Heights,
Harbor Springs and Traverse City.
