Summer theater season opens July 5

Tonight is opening night for the summer season of the Lake Superior Theatre. The 15th season will begin with the inaugural historical musical Beacon on the Rock running July 5-7 and July 10-14.

The planning process and creation of Lake Superior Theater began as a joint effort with Northern Michigan University and the City of Marquette during their Sesquicentennial Year in 1999. Dr. Shelley Russell, a Theater Professor at Northern Michigan University wrote the historical musical, Beacon on the Rock, for the city’s Sesquicentennial Celebration in 1999.

It’s described as a ” musical celebration of our diverse heritage, and the human spirit it is a story about people who came to this isolated region and found a way to survive the natural and social challenges. It is a story of courage, of desperation, of vision. It is also a story of hope, of pride, of
laughter and tears, of the past and the future and about individual
freedom and communal ties. Most of all, it is about the thousands of
families who left their homelands to carve out a home from unforgiving
wilderness.”
