Worst job of 2013: newspaper reporter
A national jobs and employment website is calling attention to how difficult it can be to work in one particular aspect of the news media.
CareerCast.com compiles an annual list of best and worst jobs.
They say ‘newspaper reporter’ is the worst job to have this year.
It has high stress levels and low salaries, and job losses are also expected to take place in the field by 2020.
Jim Reevs, publisher and general manager of The Mining Journal in Marquette, says, “There might not be the greatest number of openings, because there might be a glut of people; with some of the newspapers closing, there’s been some cutbacks at this time. They still serve a very important role to their communities. Somebody’s got to report the local news, and that’s it. There’s no other way to get local news if we don’t have the local people doing it.”
But he doesn’t think print journalism is in any danger of going away, and neither does one of the country’s wealthiest people.
Warren Buffett and his investment firm, Berkshire Hathaway, recently bought 28 newspapers.
Reevs says, “Warren Buffett’s not known to make poor investments, and what Warren’s doing is, he’s investing in newspapers that are relative to smaller markets. He’s not buying metropolitan newspapers, but the 28 newspapers he bought at $344 million were in the small, rural areas.”
