Vocational education gaining ground
It is becoming more obvious to lawmakers, schools, and businesses that a certificate or two year program can be more beneficial.
The face of learning at higher education and universities has begun to change. More students are earning degrees in shorter non–traditional programs.
When most people think of college they think of going to school for a four year degree. But colleges across the country have a number of programs that can get students in and out of school in two years.
The Technology and Occupational Sciences department at Northern Michigan University is one school that has the program. Tech programs reduce the cost of school, but prepare students for well paying jobs.
Students can enroll in a variety of vocational programs: from welding to cosmetology, to heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration.
The NMU Technology and Occupational Sciences department has about 600 students, more than half are enrolled in one or two year programs.
Keeping students interested in learning vocational studies and skilled labor is important for businesses in the community and across the country.
