Fr. Marquette statue restoration
A Marquette community group is raising money to restore and clean one of the city’s landmarks.
It’s the 1897 Father Jacques Marquette statue that’s been located on South Front Street for the last hundred years.
Vandals and the elements have damaged it over the years; items are missing from the relief images on the pedestal.
The restoration and cleaning will cost $10,500.
The Beautification and Restoration Committee has chosen a Detroit artist to do the work.
He’s expected to complete it by early summer.
There may also be a re-enactment this July of the statue’s dedication.
If you want more information about how to donate, you can call Barb Kelly of the Beautification and Restoration Committee at (906) 225-5077 or you can visit the group’s website.
