State Police report new phone scam
Michigan State Police from the Calumet Post want residents to know about a new type of telephone scam.
It involves a caller who claims to work for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Police say the caller offers a large amount of grant money to the victim for having a good credit rating and filing their tax returns on time.
The caller asks for a one-time donation to UNICEF by using MoneyGram.
State troopers say the caller may have personal information about the victim, including the Social Security number, old addresses and the identities of family members.
The State Police say to never provide personal information over the phone, and they recommend not making donations over the phone without knowing and trusting the person you’re speaking with.
