Congressional art competition

WASHINGTON, DC: Dr. Dan Benishek today announced his office is now accepting entries for the 2013 Congressional Art Competition in Michigan’s First Congressional District. This annual contest is open to all high school students in the First District. The winning piece of art will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, DC for one year.

“Northern Michigan is home to many talented young artists and this contest is an excellent way to showcase their skills. We are eager to see all of this year’s entries and to have the winning piece displayed here at the Capitol. Best of luck to all the applicants. I enjoy doing some oil painting myself, but I don’t know if my work would win any contests,” said Dr. Benishek, a general surgeon from Iron River.

   The overall district winner will be named on May 6, 2013. Because of the sprawling geography of the First District, students are encouraged to photograph their artwork and submit their entry electronically. Interested students and teachers should www.benishek.house.gov to learn more or to submit entries.

Guidelines for the contest are as follows:

1. All artwork must be submitted by Friday, April 19, 2013.
2. Artwork must be two-dimensional.
3. Each piece can be no larger than 28″ x 28″ x 4″ (28 inches high, 28 inches wide, and 4 inches deep), including the frame. If your artwork is selected as the winning piece, it will be required to be framed and must adhere to the size guidelines. Artwork cannot weigh more than 15 lbs.
4. Accepted media for artwork:

> Paintings: oil, acrylics, watercolor, etc.

> Drawings: pastels, pencil, charcoal, ink, markers

> Prints: lithographs, silkscreen, block prints

> Mixed Media: Two media such as pencil, ink, watercolor, etc.

> Computer-Generated Art

> Photography
