Kids participate in Torch Light Trek
The Noquemanon Ski Marathon kicked off Thursday in Ishpeming with the Torch Light Trek.
Around 40 kids braved the cold for a night ski at the Al Quaal Recreation Area. The track was a circular track, about 100 yards with torches lining the trail. After being held downtown Marquette for the past few years, the Torch Light Trek moved back to the recreation area this year.
The event was free, and it encourages kids to get out and learn how to ski. Bob Hendrickson, coordinator of the Torch Light Trek, said the event is also geared to beginner skiers and kids who want to have fun. He added the trek is a fun, non-competitive way to kick of the Noquemanon Ski Marathon weekend.
Hot chocolate and cookies were served, and a few camp fires burned to help keep spectators warm.
