30th annual "Trim the Tree" fundraiser in Marquette

The Marquette-Alger Special Olympics celebrated it’s 30th annual “Trim the Tree” fundraising reception Thursday night.

A buffet dinner and desert was served, and Bothwell Middle School students sang Christmas carols.

Many attendees of the reception have been supporting Special Olympics for years.

The event usually raises between $5,000-7,000 dollars.  Besides raising money,  event Coordinator Sean O’Donnell said the event gives Special Olympic athletes a chance to celebrate the holiday season.  He added that the reception is a kickoff to the holiday season, since the event is held the Thursday after Thanksgiving.

The Mille Award and the inaugural John Dorias Community Service Award were also presented.  The Mille Award goes to a Special Olympian who shows high spirit.  The Dorias Community Service Award is presented to a group or individual who demonstrates service in the community.
