U.P. woman named to Board of Dentistry

LANSING, Mich. – An Upper Michigan resident is among those Governor Rick Snyder has  appointed or reappointed to the Michigan Board of Dentistry.

The 19-member board assists the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs in   overseeing and regulating the practice of more than 7,800 dentists, 10,100 dental hygienists and 1,400 dental assistants.

“These individuals bring years of valuable experience to this board,” said Snyder. “I am confident they will effectively work to ensure the best quality of oral health services for all Michiganders.”

Appointed:

Rita Hale, of Munising, is the site manager for Pictured Rocks Lodge. Previously, she served as the regional coordinator for a congressional primary election campaign and as the office manager for an optometric practice. Hale served as a member of the Friends of Munising Public Library board from 2005-2008 and continues service in the community in various capacities. She attended Jackson Business University in Jackson. Hale will represent the general public and replaces Rosetta Sanders.

Nicholas Bournias, of Grosse Pointe Shores, is the director of the Cleft Lip and Palate Clinic at Mott Children’s Hospital in Flint. He also is a surgeon with Michigan OMS PC in Richmond and serves as attending staff in the oral and maxillofacial surgery divisions of St. John Hospital in Detroit and William Beaumont Hospital in Troy. Previously, he served as chief resident in the oral and maxillofacial division of Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. Bournias is a member of the American Dental Association, Michigan Dental Association and Detroit District Dental Society. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Oakland University and a doctorate in dental surgery from the University of Detroit’s School of Dentistry. Bournias will represent dentists and replaces Rhonda Hennessy.

Timothy Schmakel, of Bloomfield Hills, is owner of Timothy Schmakel DDS MD PC, a private practice in oral and maxillofacial surgery in Bingham Farms. He also serves as an adjunct professor for the University of Detroit’s School of Dentistry. Schmakel is a member of the American Dental Association, Michigan Dental Association and American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Ohio State University, a doctorate in dental surgery from the University of Oklahoma and a medical degree from Wayne State University. He will represent dentists with a health profession specialty certification and replaces Raymond Maturo.

Paula Weidig, of Fort Gratiot, is a dental hygienist at James Batak DDS in Marysville and a temporary dental hygienist at Scott Meyer DDS in Port Huron. Previously, she served as a dental hygiene clinical lab assistant at Baker College in Port Huron and as a general health sciences adjunct instructor at Baker College in Auburn Hills. Weidig is a member of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association and past president of the Michigan Dental Hygienists’ Association. She holds an associate degree in dental hygiene from Baker College in Port Huron, a bachelor’s degree in education from Bowling Green State University in Ohio and a master’s degree in education from Central Michigan University. Weidig will represent dental hygienists and replaces Martha Swiger.

Reappointed:

Lisa Darrow, of East Grand Rapids, is owner of Darrow Dental Sales LLC, where she represents manufacturers in Michigan, Ohio and Kentucky. Previously, she worked as an educational representative for Rowpar Pharmaceuticals and as a dental hygienist for Kenneth Gray DDS in Grand Rapids. Darrow is a member of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association and the Michigan Dental Hygienists’ Association. She earned an associate degree in applied arts and sciences and dental hygiene from Grand Rapids Community College and a bachelor’s degree in business from Davenport University. Darrow will continue to represent dental hygienists.

Deborah Manos, of Grosse Pointe Woods, is owner of Deborah Manos DDS PLLC in Grosse Pointe Woods. She is a member of the American Dental Association, Michigan Dental Association and American Academy of General Dentistry. Manos has been a member of the Michigan Board of Dentistry since 2008 and previously served on the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports. She received a doctorate in dental surgery and a master’s degree in oral biology from the University of Detroit. Manos will continue to represent dentists.

Appointees will serve four-year terms that expire June 30, 2016, and their appointments are subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.
