Marquette Matters Mural Project Complete
The City of Marquette and Downtown Development Authority have announced the completion of the Marquette Matters Mural Project. It will be available to view beginning Saturday, July 21, at the Marquette Commons.
More than 120 area youth, ages 5 to 20, worked with artist Elisabeth Genske over a three day period to create 10 mural panels. The images on the panels were designed by Genske, an NMU Art and Design major, and represent aspects of Marquette’s superior quality of life.
Funding for this project was provided by the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs; the grant was awarded to the City in April of 2012 and a call for design submissions was released. The community was invited to vote for their favorite submissions and Genske’s images were voted as the popular choice.
Panels will be on permanent display for the duration of the 2012 Marquette Farmers and Artist Market. A public reception for the artist and all youth involved is scheduled for Tuesday, July 24, 2012 from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. Mike Waite will provide musical entertainment at the reception.
The Marquette Commons is located at 112 South Third Street, Marquette.
