Synthetic Drug Ban
Governor Rick Snyder signed legislation this week to prevent the sale and use of K2, fake bath salts, Cloud Nine or any other synthetic drugs.
Local law enforcement will be enforcing that law soon — it takes effect on July 1st.
Over the next week, stores that sell White Lightning, Red Magic and other synthetic drugs will have a chance to remove them from shelves without penalty.
Michigan State Police Lt. Robert Pernaski from the Negaunee Post says the State Police are conducting an education campaign with retailers leading up to the 1st and distributing a flyer to them with information about the ban.
Possession of these substances will be a two-year felony.
Use of them will be a one-year misdemeanor.
Manufacture, delivery or possession with intent to deliver will be a seven-year felony.
Since the beginning of the year, there have been more than 200 cases across the state involving the use of these drugs.
Other innocent-sounding or even humorous-sounding names for them include Mr. Smokey, King Krypto and Happy Smurf.
But they are dangerous and highly addictive.
