Congressman Benishek applauds firefighters
WASHINGTON, DC: Dr. Dan Benishek (MI-01) today released the following
statement after visiting the Department of Natural Resources’ (DNR) fire
command center in Newberry on Sunday, June 3, 2012:
“On Sunday, I had the privilege of again visiting the Michigan Department
of Natural Resources’ (DNR) Duck Lake fire command center and the American
Red Cross shelter. Like many in Northern Michigan, I applaud the efforts
of the many firemen, volunteers, DNR personnel, members of the Red Cross
and members of the Michigan National Guard, who continue to work non-stop
to try to put an end to this fire.
With an estimated 136 structures lost and over 21,000 acres burned, the
damage done by this fire is tragic for the community. Our prayers remain
with those who have lost homes, businesses, and property.
The emergency personnel appear to be winning the battle against this
wildfire which is now 76 percent contained, but the work is far from over.
The outpouring of support from local residents and volunteers has been
tremendous, but those affected by this blaze will continue to need help as
they move forward. My office will continue to assist displaced homeowners
and businesses and will work closely with the DNR as they reapply for
federal disaster assistance.”
