MHSAA Passes Proposal; Schools to Vote on Decision
The next step in the Eric Dompierre waiver to play high school sports will be a statewide vote.
The Michigan High School Athletic Association will let member schools vote to change the group’s constitution to allow the age waiver.
That was the decision after two days of MHSAA meetings.
More than 1,500 member schools will vote on the issue in the next two weeks.
The waiver is a ‘go’ if it’s approved by a two–thirds majority.
At issue: 19 year old Eric Dompierre.
Eric has down syndrome and was held back one year.
He will be a senior in the fall at Ishpeming High School.
Under the current rule, students who turn 19 before September first of the school year cannot play sports.
