Middle School Girls get Special Conference
More than 150 fifth and sixth grade girls were at NMU today, to participate in the Marquette–Alger young women – math and science conference.
The goal of the conference was to get girls interested in jobs that involve the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math.
Women are the minority when it comes to working in these career fields.
The conference is designed to encourage girls to consider one of these careers in the future.
The girls were able to get “hands on” in every class today, from making paper to creating a “mock landslide.”
Women hold about 47% of all jobs in the U.S. workforce, but only 25% of those jobs are in the fields of math or science.
