Wildfire breaks out near Ishpeming

Fire crews from across the Western Upper Peninsula responded to a wildfire in Ishpeming Township Tuesday evening. Over 30 acres were burned in the fire south of Ishpeming near County Road 581 in Ely Township.

The fire was called in at approximately 5:45 P.M. Firefighters from Ishpeming Township were assisted by the Department of Natural Resources Fire Units, which came from Baraga, Crystal Falls, and Escanaba to assist in getting the fire under control.

A spotter plane was used by the DNR to keep an eye on the fire from above. The fire picked up momentum and was helped by a strong north wind, that helped the fire to quickly spread.

As of 8:20 P.M., fire crews had established a line perimeter around the fire; no word yet on what caused the fire to start. The Marquette County Sheriff’s office also assisted in the wildfire.
