Forsyth Twp. Police & Election Day

Many Michigan voters will go to the polls a week from today.

Communities and school districts in 70 of the state’s 83 counties are holding local elections.

In the U.P., there are elections in eight counties.

The Michigan Secretary of State has established the Michigan Voter Information Center, which can help residents determine whether they’re registered to vote and can direct them to their polling location.

The polls will be open from 7 am to 8 pm.

For one Marquette County township, the May 8th election could have a major impact on law enforcement.

The Forsyth Township Police Department is looking to renew one millage and obtain another.

In terms of land area, Forsyth Township is one of the largest townships in the state.

It’s also one of the few townships in the state with its own police department.

And Chief Tim Rector says the department could use some financial help.

He says the department assesses taxpayers one mill per year.

It’s looking for an additional mill — an extra $1 in property taxes for every $1,000 that a property is worth.

Chief Rector says if the department gets two mills instead of one, it’d be able to add at least one full-time officer and perhaps more.

Precincts One and Three will vote at the Gwinn Community Building and Precinct Two voters will go to the Little Lake Gospel Chapel.
