Project Food for a Neighbor Wraps Up
Project Food for a Neighbor is in the books for another year.
Wesley United Methodist Church in Ishpeming, St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Negaunee and others have teamed up to help out local food pantries.
Many western Marquette County residents received a plastic bag at their front door the Saturday before last.
In all, 4,000 bags went out.
Over the weekend, volunteers brought the bags back in, and hundreds of the bags were full of donated items.
Project committee chair Dick Derby says they’ve collected more than 6,000 pounds of non-perishable food so far, along with some paper products and also some personal hygiene products.
The items all go to the Ishpeming Salvation Army and the Ishpeming St. Vincent de Paul food pantries.
Derby says he’s grateful to everyone who donated or who volunteered to distribute and collect the bags.
The project also couldn’t happen without help from area young people — he says more than 100 area young people chipped in.
This was the third year that the two churches have teamed up for Project Food for a Neighbor.
