"Project Food for a Neighbor" collection April 21st

The “Project Food for a Neighbor” bags have been distributed across western Marquette County, and now organizers are planning for what could be a busy day Saturday to pick up the donated items. The effort, in its’ third year, is a low-impact way for residents to give back to the less fortunate.

Here’s how it works: bags were distributed to homes in and around the Negaunee, Ishpeming and West Ishpeming areas April 14 by volunteers. Instructions on the bags provided information about suggested items to donate: paper products, non-perishable food items, as well as hygiene and toiletry items. Those bags will be collected April 21, from 10 a.m. until noon.

And, it couldn’t have come at a better time for the Salvation Army in Ishpeming. Liz Nevala says the lack of donations paired with a bad economy has really hit the Salvation Army’s pantry hard. Donations like that of “Food for a Neighbor” will really help the Salvation keep its pantry stocked and food on the tables of those in need. The Salvation Army is currently looking for donations of boxed dinners and other non–perishable food items.

Collected items will be donated to the Salvation Army and St. Vincent DePaul Society in Ishpeming and Negaunee, and individual donations to the charities are also welcomed.
