Grass Fire in Manistique
Manistique Public Safety and the Manistique Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched to a grass fire in Manistique Township at 1:57 p.m. on Saturday.
The fire started after property owner, Michael William Jenerou, dumped ashes from his wood boiler into a field. The fire quickly spread into a wooded area. Firefighters were on the scene for an hour and a half fighting the blaze. About one and a half acres of a wooded area burned in the fire.
Jenerou was cited by the DNR for open burning and failure to take precautions to stop a fire from escaping the forest area.
Firefighters were assisted on the scene by the Sault Tribe Police and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.
