A look back to the 1920's with the Gossard Girls
At one time, the H.W. Gossard Company of Chicago was the world’s largest maker of intimate apparel for women. As well as, the biggest employer for women in the Upper Peninsula.
Gossard had a factory in Ishpeming for over 56 years. They once had one in Gwinn. At one time, this company employed more than 700 people. Ninety percent of those people, were women.
This provided an opportunity for women in a small community to provide for their families. The Ishpeming factory was housed in what is now the Pioneer Mall Building in Downtown Ishpeming.
