New Ski Jump at Suicide Bowl
The Ishpeming Ski Club is adding a fifth ski jump to Suicide Bowl.
It’s aimed at younger skiers who are trying to progress in the sport.
Construction is underway on a new 25–meter jump, and that work will continue through Saturday.
The club has kids as young as 4 or 5 years old learning how to jump.
Once the kids are capable of getting their bearings on a pair of skis, Suicide Bowl’s smallest jump suits them just fine.
But Ishpeming Ski Club president Tom Peterson says they need a next step — the 40-meter jump is a bit too much for most of them.
The 25-meter hill will be operational this winter.
The club is also giving families of young skiers a break this winter on the gear and coaching they need to learn the sport — this winter, the club won’t charge for any of those things.
Peterson says community donations allow the club to offer coaching, equipment and hill time for free.
A. Lindberg and Sons Construction, Holli Trucking and other businesses have helped the ski club, too.
They’ve offered their services for free, or at greatly reduced rates, to help build the new jump.
