Moose Population Growth Slowing Down
The Michigan DNRE says growth in the western U.P.’s moose population is slowing down.
They did a moose survey last month.
And they say there are about 433 moose in Marquette County, Baraga County and northern Iron County combined.
There were 420 the last time the DNRE checked two years ago.
The DNRE says their informal estimates for the eastern U.P. have found fewer than 100 moose there.
So they say there are about 500 moose in the U.P. altogether.
A recent state law gave the state’s Natural Resources Commission the authority to establish a moose hunting season if the group should ever want to do so.
