Mine Opponents Accuse Kennecott of Permit Violation
The debate over mining operations in Marquette County continues.
Kennecott is continuing operations at the future site of the Eagle Mine near Big Bay.
Crews have been installing additional electrical lines in the area near Eagle Rock this week.
Catherine Parker and others opposed to the mine operations believe this is a violation of the company’s permit with the Michigan DNRE.
DNRE Deputy Director for Environmental Protection Jim Sygo disagreed when we spoke with him.
Parker and others are concerned about future mining operations.
She says the goal of those opposed to the mining is just to preserve the character of the U.P.
And, this week, an American flag flying upside down as a sign of distress is flying at Eagle Rock.
You may remember that two protesters were arrested at the rock this past spring for trespassing.
Since then, the company has installed a fence along the perimeter and has posted security guards around the clock.
