Muskallonge Park Warning System Saves Lives
A newly-installed emergency notification system at Muskallonge Lake State Park is being credited with saving the lives of several campers over the weekend.
The park supervisor activated the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration-funded warning system called Emnet.
The warning system alerted the nearly–full camping areas of the park of the severe weather and ordered all visitors to evacuate and take cover.
The high winds uprooted 50 trees that fell throughout the heavily populated camping areas.
No one was injured during the severe weather.
The purchase and installation of the equipment was part of a cooperative effort between a number of state and federal organizations.
Muskallonge Lake State Park is one of three state parks that currently have the Emnet equipment.
Tahquamenon Falls State Park is operational, with Porcupine Mountain State Park coming online sometime next month.
Two other Michigan state parks are slated to receive funding for similar systems within the next year.
In recent months, other emnet systems have also successfully delivered warnings, including a 9–1–1 outage and a gas main leak both in ironwood, michigan.
