Michigan Tries ‘Race to the Top’ Round 2
Michigan’s Department of Education says it’s filed an application for Round 2 of the Race to the Top program.
Race to the Top is a U.S. Department of Education program that could give Michigan up to $400 million for schools.
The ‘Accelerate Michigan’ theme includes plans for improving student test scores and providing more professional development for teachers.
85% of local school districts and charter schools have passed resolutions saying they support the application.
Most teachers’ unions have done the same.
The state was not a finalist in the first round.
State education officials say that was because of a previous lack of union support.
