Former ABC 10/CW 5 Reporter Passes Away
This is ABC 10 News Now senior reporter Mike Hoey writing here, and I’m in shock right now.
When I first came here, one of the reporters we already had here was a young woman named Kelly Meloney.
If you’re a longtime ABC 10 watcher, you may remember that she used to anchor our 5:30pm and 11pm newscasts.
She had a fun-loving, bubbly personality but took her work very seriously and was committed to news as a career.
Earlier today, I received a phone call telling me the very sad news that Kelly has passed away.
I last spoke with Kelly about 6 months ago, before she was diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer.
In mid-to-late March, I tried to call her a couple of times to see what she was up to.
I never received a return call, and now I know why.
The cancer claimed her life 4 days ago.
Kelly was just 26 years old.
She worked here from June 2006 to May 2007, when she went to the NBC station in Casper, Wyoming.
If I remember correctly, her boyfriend Cole, to whom she later became engaged, was in graduate school at the University of Wyoming at the time and she took the job to be near him.
Kelly was originally from the Chicago area, but she had family in Wisconsin and spent a lot of time there over the years.
She truly loved the U.P. and she spent lots of happy hours on the snowmobile trails.
We miss her, and our thoughts and prayers are with her family.
Her visitation and funeral are tomorrow and Friday.
I wish I were able to attend them — unfortunately, I cannot.
If you remember Kelly and want to share well-wishes with her loved ones, you can head here.
