Au Train Dam Sale Agreement

A dam that supplies power to parts of Alger County is on its way to new ownership.

UPPCO owns the Au Train Dam, along M-94 near Munising.

But it recently reached an agreement with an independent power company — North American Hydro of Wisconsin — to sell the dam to them.

The dam needs extensive repairs to meet federal flood safety requirements.

Those repairs would cost up to $12 million, a lot more than what the electricity it produces is worth.

UPPCO has said North American Hydro has agreed to make those repairs and bring the dam back up to standards.

There’s no word yet on what the sale price is.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission still needs to sign off on the sale.

But both sides are expecting that to happen by the end of the year.
