2010 Budget In Place With More Cuts
Michigan’s budget for the rest of fiscal 2010 is finally in place.
The good news is there won’t be another government shutdown this time.
Governor Jennifer Granholm signed the last of the budget bills late this morning, meeting the deadline with about 13 hours to spare.
Now for the bad news — more cuts mean some layoffs for the State Police.
16 maintenance people who take care of U.P. posts are being laid off tomorrow.
3 of those 16 people are full-time.
The Negaunee, Manistique and Stephenson posts are losing 1 full-timer each.
The state’s looking to hire private contractors to fill the void.
11 motor carrier officers, who inspect school buses, are also being let go.
But none of them are in the U.P.
