Where Should Calumet Go with Air Service?
That’s not all that’s going on with the Houghton County Airport, either.
The County Board, and both the Houghton and Hancock City Councils, are having a joint meeting tomorrow night about the airport.
The major airline that serves the airport recently said it wants out.
Delta Airlines flies there, doing business under the name Mesaba Airlines.
In mid-July, Delta filed a notice with the U.S. Department of Transportation saying they intended to terminate service to Calumet in 90 days.
They did that to make themselves eligible for federal Essential Air Service subsidies.
USDOT asked airlines for new service proposals for the airport.
Mesaba turned one in, and so did Skywest Airlines, a subsidiary of United.
The joint meeting is at 6 tomorrow night at Michigan Tech’s Memorial Union Building.
An airport consultant will be there to outline the 2 proposals and listen to input from anyone in the community who shows up.
