NMU Shares WiMax Network With City

A new technological agreement between the City of Marquette and Northern Michigan University may soon be a win-win situation.

NMU recently rolled out its next-generation WiMax high-speed internet system.

In order to reach out further within Marquette, the university made a deal with the city to install antennae on existing buildings.

In exchange, city departments get to use the WiMan network to conduct their business.

The WiMax network will mean decreased radio and cell phone use, along with less paper usage.

And that brings some immediate cost savings.

One of the antennae is already up on Fire Hall #2 and is still in the process of having the fiber-optic cables set up.

Marquette City Information Services Director Al Hawker says the setup for the city WiMax network should be finished by late October.
