Michigan Tech Prof Dies in Kayak Accident
The Michigan Tech campus is in mourning after a faculty member dies in a kayaking accident.
47-year-old Richard Honrath, Jr. died Friday night.
The Baraga County Sheriff’s Department says it happened on the Silver River in L’Anse Township a little before 8:30.
His kayak rolled over in fast-moving water and he got pinned under a tree.
Honrath’s kayaking partner tried to rescue him with a throw rope, but he couldn’t and called 911.
Honrath was pronounced dead at Baraga County Memorial Hospital.
He’d taught civil and environmental engineering at Michigan Tech since 1992.
He’s also the 2nd Michigan Tech professor to die in an accident this school year.
Geology professor William Gregg died in December in a fall at the Quincy Mine Hoist Shaft in Hancock.
