Street sign causes serious injury in car accident

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office responded to a one-car personal injury accident on County Road 550 just after 11 p.m. Tuesday.

Deputies say Cody Bigger,22, of Marquette, was driving his 1997 Pontiac northbound on County Road 550 near Middle Island Point Road when his vehicle crossed the center line, left the roadway, and struck a street sign and several trees before coming to a stop.

Part of the street sign broke off and crashed through the windshield, causing serious but non–fatal injuries. Bigger was transported to Marquette General Hospital and admitted for the injuries.

Deputies do not believe alcohol and speed were factors, and the preliminary investigation suggests Bigger may have fallen asleep.

The incident is still under investigation.

Sheriff’s deputies were assisted on scene by NMU Public Safety, Marquette Township Fire and Marquette General EMS.
