HOUGHTON — A Houghton man accused of murdering an elderly woman in her home has been found not guilty by reason of insanity.
30–year–old Timothy Cadeau appeared in Houghton County Circuit Court on charges of open murder and first degree home invasion. Police say Cadeau entered the home and killed 84–year–old Geraldine Fouts in September 2013 at the Douglass House Apartments in Houghton.
The prosecution provided witnesses from Copper Country Mental Health and the Houghton Police Department that established the victim’s blood had been found on Cadeau’s shorts and shoes and that her driver’s license was found inside his apartment. The court also heard testimony from a forensic psychologist that determined Cadeau showed symptoms of psychosis and paranoid delusions. The psychologist concluded there was no way Cadeau could have known what he was doing at the time of the murder.
He will be evaluated at the Center for Forensic Psychiatry for up to 60 days when it will then be determined if he will be committed to an institution for an indefinite period of time.
