Hartman will hire his own counsel. Franjose has opted for a court-appointed attorney.

They were two of the three people believed to be involved in an alleged home invasion in Mellen Township. The Menominee County Sheriff’s Department says the alleged incident happened at N5733 Range Line Drive. A man living there woke up shortly before 5 a.m. Central time Monday to a loud banging noise coming from his house — specifically, from his garage. He called 911 and said he believed someone was trying to break in.

When the Sheriff’s Department arrived, a deputy found a 19-year-old man dead in the home. The resident had shot him more than once. Neither man’s name is being released at this point. The resident’s name is being withheld until after a final decision is made about whether or not the shooting was justified.

Police will not release the name of the deceased suspect out of respect for the privacy of his family. An autopsy was performed on him on Tuesday, and the results are pending.

Sheriff’s deputies, the Menominee Police and the Michigan State Police continued to search the surrounding wooded area. A state trooper found Hartman and Franjose about a quarter-mile from the house. The Sheriff’s Department says the pair has confessed to breaking open both a garage door and a door to the house’s living area along with a third person in order to steal property. Police also believe the young men broke into at least one vacant house nearby before the alleged home invasion.

Hartman and Franjose both have a preliminary exam scheduled for November 24th.
