UPDATE: Name released in fatal accident

UPDATE — 11:05 a.m. November 10, 2015 (EST)

Police have released the name of the woman who died in a one-vehicle accident Sunday afternoon in Osceola Township.

Forty-eight year old Diane McCollum of Calumet suffered a fatal medical event that caused her vehicle to veer off the road and strike a tree. McCollum’s vehicle caught fire upon impact with the tree. A nearby volunteer firefighter was able to quickly put out the fire.


 

CALUMET — Police are investigating the cause of a fatal car accident that left the driver dead.

Troopers from the Calumet Post of the Michigan State Police responded to a one–vehicle accident on US–41 near Highway Location Road Sunday at approximately 5:30 p.m.

Witnesses say the vehicle crossed the center line and ran off the left side of the roadway before crashing into a large tree. The vehicle caught fire after the impact.

A nearby trooper responded in about one minute to the accident scene. One of the witnesses was a firefighter. He assisted the officer in extinguishing the fire.

The 48–year–old Laurium woman was transported to Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Neither alcohol nor drugs were factors in the accident.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
