Car crosses center line hits Iron Mountain semi-trailer truck
An Iron Mountain truck driver is recovering from injuries sustained during a three car accident on US-141 near Amberg, Wisconsin Thursday morning.
The Marinette County Sheriff’s Office says it happened around 2:40 a.m. on State Quarry Road, 30 miles south of Iron Mountain. An investigation revealed a northbound car driven by Andrew R. Kunna, 26, of Menasha, Wisconsin crossed the center line and struck a southbound semi truck driven by Brian Scott Herrala, 48, of Iron Mountain. The truck fell onto its side after the initial impact, blocking the roadway. Moments later, a northbound semi truck driven by Peter W. Johnson, 48, of Manitowoc, Wisconsin drove through and over Herrala’s overturned semi. Police say Johnson was unable to stop in time.
All three vehicles were occupied solely by the drivers, who were all taken to Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain. Kunna was seriously injured. Both Herrala and Johnson were treated for non-life threatening injuries. Kunna is under investigation for operating while intoxicated.
Traffic was detoured in both directions for several hours until the debris could be removed. The northbound semi was empty, however the southbound semi was hauling metal crates.
The Marinette County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on scene by the Wisconsin State Patrol, Pembine Rescue Squad, Beacon Paramedics from Iron Mountain, the Marinette County Highway Commission, and Fire Departments from Wausaukee, Amberg, and Pembine.
